The United States Flag Code, found in Title 4 of the U.S. Code, outlines the proper display and respectful treatment of the American flag. It emphasizes that the flag should never touch the ground, be used as clothing or advertising, or have any markings placed on it. The flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset, and if shown at night, it must be properly illuminated. It should occupy the position of honor when displayed with other flags and be flown at half-staff to mark national mourning. When a flag becomes too worn for display, it should be disposed of in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. While the Flag Code serves as a guide to honor national symbols, it does not carry legal penalties for violations. Flags should be mended and cleaned when needed – we clean American flags at no charge as a courtesy year round.
